Renewable HVO, we’re exclusive!
Operations & Sustainability
We now run our vehicles exclusively on Renewable HVO. This means we’ve ended our direct use of fossil-fuel diesel and have massively reduced our vehicle running emissions, saving over 500 tonnes of CO2e annually. There are powerful direct benefits for your production and the UK Film Industry too. Not only will our shift automatically reduce your production’s Scope 3 emissions for upstream transportation, but the increased capacity of our fuel tanks at each of our 7 depots means facility and production vehicles can now swing by any time to refuel.
We can even install a temporary HVO tank on site for your production, and it goes without saying that we’ll continue to deliver HVO to unit base, location and studio.
We are not the first or only company in our industry to make this move. There’s a major opportunity for suppliers and productions to work together and build a nationwide network of HVO refuelling stations, with the future goal being that these stations are replaced with electric charging infrastructure. This could be the start of something very powerful.
Carly McKay, Director – Sustainability and Projects
Our fleet’s future is electric, but this total shift to Renewable HVO immediately diverts a large chunk of our money away from fossil fuels. We want to make it easy for like-minded productions to do the same.
Crispin Hardy, MD
The shift goes together with Location One’s continued efforts to reduce fuel consumption, including working closely with the locations department to minimise vehicle movements, and using vehicle telematics to change driving behaviours.

A bit of myth-busting…
- HVO comes from palm oil which contributes to deforestation. FALSE
The renewable HVO fuel we supply is sourced from ISCC-verified waste-derived products, for example used cooking oil (UCO), and contains no palm oil. It meets the Renewable Fuel Transport Obligation (RFTO), with sustainability confirmed through the Proof of Sustainability (POS) and membership in the Renewable Fuel Assurance Scheme (RFAS).
- HVO is a biodiesel. FALSE
HVO is a renewable diesel, not a biodiesel, as it is FAME-free. Its synthetic nature ensures consistent molecules, reducing degradation risks from water and microbial contamination, leading to superior performance, a ten times longer shelf life, and better cold-start properties compared to regular biodiesel.
- HVO isn’t compatible with my diesel vehicles or generators. FALSE
HVO complies with EN15940 standards, ensuring compatibility with all OEMs meeting EN19450 specifications. It serves as a direct substitute for diesel, and you can blend it with diesel seamlessly if required.
- Combusting HVO does not release CO2 emissions into the atmosphere. FALSE
When HVO fuel is combusted, it releases CO2e emissions into the atmosphere just as fossil-fuel diesel does. However, because the fuel is derived from waste plant products which recently absorbed CO2 from the earth’s atmosphere, this release is part of a balanced carbon cycle. Conversely, mining and burning fossil fuels which were formed millions of years ago, hugely imbalances this cycle and leads to high concentrations of CO2 in the atmosphere.
